'Mutual Love and Respect': Excerpt from my Exegetical Paper on Ephesians 5:21-33

This text, Ephesians 5, asserts that women are to show Godly surrender by submitting to the leadership of their husbands while men demonstrate Godly surrender by sacrificing their life for their wife and family just as Christ sacrificed His life for the church. A marriage founded on biblical principles must be about ‘give and give’ and not ‘give and take’ if the marriage is going to work. Women submit; men sacrifice; each demonstrating a selfless act of mutual love and respect. Children are also mentioned in Ephesians. Children are a great gift to marriage and often what children see their parents do, they will do. Parents are often a child’s greatest role model and the parent’s behavior heavily influences that child’s behavior. If that parent is following and obeying God, that child will learn obedience through them. A husband is commanded to provide unconditional love to his wife and in return or in addition to this, a wife is commanded and expected to respect her husband.
